Abstract

We review the recent experimental results on reconfigurable and nonlinear microstructured metamaterials with negative refractive index. New types of reconfigurable metamaterials are suggested and described having either nonlinear magnetic or nonlinear electric response at microwave frequencies. By introducing a voltage variable capacitor as a nonlinear element within each resonator, the frequency shift of either magnetic or electric resonance is obtained at power changing of incident wave. A novel approach is discussed for efficient re-tuning of the transmission characteristics of metamaterials by the lattice period modulation. Some of the re-tuning mechanisms discussed here can be suitable for scaling toward optical wavelengths with useful applications realizable in a wide frequency range.
